WORMS AND YOUR PUPROUND WORMS Almost all pups are born with roundworms as they are passed through the placenta and in the mother's milk. These roundworms can cause serious health problems in puppies and in severe cases can kill. Certain roundworms are a human health risk particularly to children (Toxocara causes visceral larval migrans which causes a range of diseases in man from liver problems to blindness). There are many proprietary treatments for worms, currently we at Dalehead recommend Milbemax tablets as a safe and effective choice. Given to your puppy by mouth fortnightly from 2 weeks until 12 weeks of age. Once your pup reaches 6 months of age then a complete wormer is advised treating both round and tapeworms. To prevent pups being born with roundworms the bitch can be wormed when pregnant - please ring for advise on this. TAPE WORMS Dogs are infected with tapeworms by fleas or by eating raw meat and scavenging. We advise treatment of adult dogs every 3 months, this is especially important in working sheepdogs as the dog tapeworm causes Gid in sheep. The Dalehead recommendation for tapeworm control is Milbemax tablets, which treat round and tapeworms, four times a year. LUNG WORM These are uncommon in dogs but can be picked up when scavenging. Please speak to one of our vets if your dog is coughing. HEART WORM A worm which needs the mosquito to complete its lifecycle and therefore infect your pet. This is a worry for those of you who are planning to take you dog abroad on a pet passport. We will advise you on control if you contact us at the Surgery. SUMMARY worm your pup fortnightly to 12 weeks old with Milbemax tablets. Worm your adult dog every 3 months with Milbemax tablets. Ask us the current recommendations if traveling abroad with your pet. |
