RISING CELL COUNTS Many dairy farmer clients have encountered problems this summer and autumn with rising cell counts resulting in financial penalties from the dairies. In this situation we feel that identification of high cell count cows through individual cow somatic cell counting or California milk testing is very useful, as is identification of the organisms causing the problem by sampling a proportion of clinical mastitis cases and high cell count cows for bacteriology. The control measures which need to be put in place will vary depending on whether the problem is mainly environmental (spread outside the parlour) or contagious (spread predominately at milking time within the parlour). We stock California milk testing kits as a rapid cow side indicator of high cell count cows and quarters and also have packs of 10 free individual cell count test kits to help to monitor high cell count cows. Furthermore we have negotiated a special rate with Pfizer for performing bacteriology on mastitis/high cell count milk samples at a local laboratory. We feel that we are in the ideal position to advise on cell count management, mastitis monitoring and formulating an action plan for mastitis control on your farm. For more information please speak to one of the farm animal vets. FLUKE TREATMENT FOR SHEEP Acute fluke is usually seen in the autumn and early winter. If treating sheep at this time of year we would recommend a drench which is effective against both adult and immature flukes such as Fasinex drench (also sold in combination with a wormer as Combinex ) or Trodax injection. Ewes should not be treated during the first 40 days after tupping or at the same time as receiving copper drenches or injection. Additional discounts are currently available on the largest pack sizes (5 litre sheep Fasinex and Combinex ) until the end of the year.
